Laubach Literacy Council of San Diego County Inc.
We are an all-volunteer organization established in 1961 offering free ESL (English as a Second Language) adult classes every week at various locations throughout San Diego County, California. Students and tutors meet in small groups or on a one-to-one basis.
The demographics of each tutoring center vary with the population of the surrounding community – we have learners originally from Asia, Africa, Mexico, Central America, and South America. Tutoring takes place in library study rooms throughout the County as well as in various community centers and church facilities.
The Council also provides tutor training with professional trainers. Training to tutors is offered free of charge.
Donations are extremely important for subsidizing purchases of English language workbooks, ESL newspapers, and other reading materials for those of our students who can’t afford them. Although we have no paid staff and all our tutors are volunteers, we do have some administrative costs such as insurance and professional tutor training. Students pay no registration or tuition fees.
We're a non-profit tax-exempt organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Our Tax I.D. number is 95-3678691, and all contributions are 100% tax-deductible.
The majority of our support comes from individual donors. Your contribution of $20 or more per year will help cover our costs.
Around 2006 we began a partnership with the San Diego County Library L.E.A.R.N. ESL program in which they provide study spaces for our tutors and learners in many of the county libraries, and we arrange for professional training for their ESL tutors. They also assist us with the cost of training tutors and the cost of books. Because of this invaluable collaboration, we are able to provide professionally trained tutors, materials, and spaces where learners can study with their tutors in classes or on a one-on-one basis. Our collaboration was selected by the National Association of Counties as a winner of their 2008 Acts of Caring Awards, which recognizes the top county volunteer programs in the U.S.
We are proud to be affiliated with SDCOL. They provide us with resources and promote our Council throughout the County.
We are a member of ProLiteracy, a nonprofit international literacy organization based in Syracuse, NY.
VolunteerMatch is a national organization that helps us recruit volunteers to teach English. Their popular service welcomes millions of visitors a year and has become the preferred Internet recruiting tool for more than 75,000 nonprofit organizations.
